In order to retrieve information necessary for optimal advising, students must sign up for an advisor at least 24 hours in advance of any registration activities requiring an advisor's approval. This includes Initial Course Selection, Adding and/or Dropping and Change of Registration.
The Computer Science & Information Systems Department is part of YSU's College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Sign-up lists for faculty advisors and the times they are available are posted outside the department office. An online list of advisors can be found below.
Note that students who have completed more than 30 semester hours and who have an overall grade point average of 2.00 or greater do not need to obtain an advisor's approval, unless they are in their first term at YSU after transferring from another institution. However, it is recommended that you see an advisor on a regular basis.
Students must have entered tentative courses into SOLAR before meeting with an advisor. Program curriculum/requirement sheets are available online in our Programs section, and paper copies are located outside the main office. Instructions for accessing SOLAR are in the front of the Schedule of Classes. Failure to come prepared with courses in SOLAR will result in the student being asked to leave, enter the courses, and return. If the appointment time has expired, the student will have to set up a new appointment time.
Advising for Registration is the process of review and approval of a student's desired courses during registration periods. Advisors can provide recommendations about courses within the major and can assist in determining if a course meets one of the General Education Requirements, five general education requirements: NS, NI, AL, SP and writing, oral, and critical thinking intensives. However, the student is responsible for determining and fulfilling other requirements outside of the major. Much of this information is already available to the student in the University Bulletin, on departmental curriculum sheets, and the advising web pages for the department and the College of Arts and Sciences.
Registration is the process of choosing individual section of courses which are offered. Faculty advisors are responsible for the advising; students are responsible for their own registration. Students should not and do not have to wait for the day they register to be advised. Advisement information will not change during the registration period.
Current majors in CIS, CSCI, or IT who have not completed a 2600 level course in the department may sign up with any CSIS faculty member for advising.
Current majors who have completed any 2600 level course in the department should be advised by an advisor with better knowledge of their area as follows:
